This Argentinean restaurant has caused a real stir in Almaty. There is always anticipation when new places open, so in autumn 2010 – when Los Gauchos opened its doors – the crowds came thick and fast, and still do, although with less regularity during the week. Scoring high in food, service and atmosphere – something of a rare achievement in Almaty – means it is fast become an all-encompassing destination station for foodies and fashionistas alike. Cowhide-covered chairs, dark wooden furniture and a fiery grill in full view of diners give a real rancho flavour to the space, and the clever layout accommodates both large raucous groups and quiet romantic couples. The menu is delightfully small by local standards, but the choice is easy: steak, steak and steak again. There are four varieties to choose from and a range of sauces and garnishes to plump up the plate (our favourite is the bacon-wrapped asparagus). All that’s missing now is a glass of wine to wash it down.
