Bellagio is a well-known, if not the best-known, restaurant in Almaty. Located on Gornaya Street (the extension of Dostyk that goes all the way to Medeu and Shymbulak), it is a playground for the rich kids of Almaty. Its location on the bank of the Malaya Almatinka River makes it a great spot for a restaurant, particularly in summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the sound of the water rushing past and the green isolation of the mountains. The food, sadly, does not quite meet the expected standard, though the originally Italian menu now offers some good (and much cheaper) Kazakh cooking, too. This, along with the rather steep prices, has left some unconvinced by the restaurant, but seeing as it ticks most other boxes – and has an extremely faithful clientele – we felt its place here is still deserved. Go with an open mind, and you might find yourself being pleasantly surprised.
