Hg2 : The Hedonist

A Hedonist’s guide to…

Amsterdam

Vondelpark
Amsterdamse Bos
A vast green space on the outskirts of central Amsterdam. There's a fair few things to do there, and plenty of space to meander around.
Vijzelstraat
This road crosses at least four canals and will take you from the centre of Amsterdam all the way down to De Pijp.
Egelantiersstraat
You can never have enough handbags, and on Egelantiersstraat you'll find the perfect one to add the collection.
Amstelpark
A wonderful park for families with younger kids, with mini golf, pony rides and a miniature train.
Damstraat Rent-A-Bike
Centrally located with a large range of different kinds of bikes to choose from - like tandems and scooters, you'll find what you need.
Fabulous and Vintage
For something a little off the beaten track, Van Ostadestraat has a sweet Bohemian vintage store that sells clothes and furniture.
Sarphatipark
Probably the prettiest park in the city, Sarphatipark is also one of the few parks that doesn't allow dogs, so leave Rover at home.
Herengracht
Another canal-side street that plays host to the shops with the 'where did you get that' appeal.
Traditional Chinese Massage
Oosterpark
A less crowded park than the more popular choices, Oosterpark has its share of monuments and green space.
Beatrixpark
Perfect for those sunny days out when all you want to do is lounge around and appreciate the surrounds, Beatrixpark is tranquil and relaxing.
Oriental Pearl
Cheap, no-frills and the real deal, you'll get a proper hands on massage that'll have you feeling relaxed and stress-free in as little as twenty minutes.
Elandsgracht
A broad, tree-lined street that is a good place to pick up some denim outifits.
Cinema Pathé Tuschinski
An impressive old art-deco theatre that still functions in its original capacity as a cinema.
Café van Zuylen
This brown café's bridge terrace can sit a hundred customers and give them all a stretch of sun. Bask and enjoy a slow glass of Dutch beer.
Café Brandon
Cosy, retro brown café with the added treat (for some) that it often ignores the rules for indoors smoking.
The Movies
A restaurant inside a cinema, the best reason for coming here is the beautifully-preserved art deco interior. Food ain't half bad either.
Semhar
Restaurant Semhar serves East African flavours with a smile. It might not be in the nicest location, but the food is genuine and tasty.
Broodje Bert
Don't judge this little treasure from its exterior, instead, go in and have a bite of their sandwiches, which will power you all day.
Eden Amsterdam American
The chain hotel experience, efficient and smooth, set in the monolithic grandeur of the Hotel American 's art-nouveau confines. Placed well for tourists.
Tjing Tjing
A welcoming (and not too expensive) local hotspot, Tjing Tjing is packed with vestiges of South Africa, serves traditional Cape Town grub, and often puts on live outdoor music (African, of course).
Artis Zoo
A zoo! With animals of all shapes and sizes, and if you are so inclined, there is even a petting zoo.
Surprise Bar
This is a local club for local people and is as about as close as you will get to the true Dutch clubbing experience.
Paradiso
Another well-known live music venue - check out the London's Calling nights if you are craving the sounds of the capital.
Foodism
A snack place that morphs into serving dinner when the sun goes down, Foodism has a brash, artsy style that is very welcoming.
De Vergulde Gaper
Not just a good place to grab a snack, De Vergulde Gaper can rustle up a proper dinner for those who want to spend some more time lounging in the sun.
De Bakkerswinkel
Cake! And scones and pastries and anything else that has to be baked, this place is worth fighting through the Red Light District for.
Da Portare Via
A pizza place, to put it at its most blunt, but a place that makes very very good pizza, bursting with flavour and reasonably priced.
Brasserie de Pereboom
Your average Dutch café, a good place to sit on the terrace and people watch. Nothing very surprising here, either good or bad.
Bagels & Beans
Delicious bagels and coffee beans basically, though the beans are usually in the form of a drink by the time you pay for them. Better than your average coffee joint.
Gollem
Go on a hops-flavoured taste adventure at Gollem, which is stocked with hundreds of different ales. For people who really appreciate beers.
Pata Negra
Permanently busy, which goes to show how much people go for the authentic spanish feel Pata Negra is selling. Expect to be jostled.
Vondel Hotel
Small but perfectly formed and with a garden that is a delightful getaway from the otherwise busy tourist area. A calming influence.
Hotel V
An explosion of different designs and tastes results in a unique feel at Hotel V. A comfortable stay in a prime location.
Hotel Arena
Out of the centre but with enough nearby to explore, Hotel Arena makes up for its location with very reasonable prices.
CitizenM
A concept hotel, which we think means quirky design and strange features that will make you feel cooler by the minute. Good value for money and with easy links to the city centre.
Chic & Basic Hotel
What more needs to be said? This hotel is both basic, with a laid-back service, and chic, containing rooms with a bit of flair.
‘t Hotel
Set on one of the prettiest canals in Amsterdam, 't Hotel is the very epitome of comfort and cosiness.
