Hg2 : The Hedonist

A Hedonist’s guide to…

Amsterdam

Lola’s
Café do Koe
Everything you need for an evening out in one place, with a competent restaurant, a bar and even a hash café next door.
Café Shiller
A superior art deco bar with a comfortable, luscious interior that is a step above the usual tourist traps.
Café Thijssen
A nice large terrace here means you have a good shot at getting a seat and taking advantage of Café Thijssen's enviable location.
Café van Zuylen
This brown café's bridge terrace can sit a hundred customers and give them all a stretch of sun. Bask and enjoy a slow glass of Dutch beer.
Café Weber
The place for late night drinking, staying open beyond the usual for Amsterdam bars. Despite its large size, you'll have to get there (relatively) early to catch a seat.
Café de Pijp
If you want to spend an evening exploring De Pijp, then this retro-styled Café is a good place to start.
Café Brandon
Cosy, retro brown café with the added treat (for some) that it often ignores the rules for indoors smoking.
G-Spot
It might be tricky to find, but when you do, you are guaranteed a good time at the G-Spot. The main action happens in a hot little box of a room.
Gollem
Go on a hops-flavoured taste adventure at Gollem, which is stocked with hundreds of different ales. For people who really appreciate beers.
Het Schuim
A chance to look cultured and enjoy a sip of your favourite alcohol, Het Schuim is a combination of art gallery and bar.
Kingfisher
A mainstay of the hip and fashionable area of De Pijp, Kingfisher doesn't get wrapped up in its own coolness that mixes a good cocktail.
Lime
A change from most of the other Red Light District offerings, Lime is modern and perfectly pleasant.
Nel
Though the leafy, laid-back square might suggest a more garden-like atmosphere, Nel is a slick bar that plays and hosts good music.
Suzy Wong
Unashamedly chic, but managing to avoid pretentiousness, Suzy Wong is a place for hedonist's to let their true colours show.
Vyne
Not surprisingly at all given the name, Vyne serves a fabulous selection of fine wines from around the world.
Werck
If you've ever wanted to make a Dutch friend, then Werck is the place to go, where the crowding on the wooden tables means you're likely to end up next to a convivial stranger.
Wolvenstraat 23
This unnamed bar has a retro, bright style and is a quirky, fun place to spend an evening as you try to remember the lyrics to the 70s tunes being played.
Door 74
This is an appointment only bar dedicated to late night drinking and the perfection of the art of cocktail making and consumption.
De Nieuwe Anita
Hard to describe, De Neiuwe Anita is not just an anarchic bar, but also a cinema and a performance space. Something very different.
De Engelbewaarder
This a delightful old gem of a brown café, with an air of literary charm. A chance to get away from the bustle of the more touristy spots.
Bubbles & Wines
This tucked away little bar that is dedicated to the fruit of the vine is an excellent place to kick off the evening, with an excellent selection that can be accompanied with a tasty range of snacks.
Arc
A bar going through something of an identity crisis, Arc still manages to serve some of the freshest and most delicious cocktails in Amsterdam.
