Hg2 : The Hedonist

A Hedonist’s guide to…

Amsterdam

De Luwte
Almost a Dutch cliché with a canal-side terrace with rickety tables and chairs, and an interior stocked with bare dark wood and art deco flourishes. Perfect for a sedate dinner.
The Movies
A restaurant inside a cinema, the best reason for coming here is the beautifully-preserved art deco interior. Food ain't half bad either.
Semhar
Restaurant Semhar serves East African flavours with a smile. It might not be in the nicest location, but the food is genuine and tasty.
Vermeer
A uniformly excellent eating experience, which, while it might not surprise, will most certainly satisfy.
Classico
There's been a mediterranen menu update for a much loved relaxed foodie venue.
Yamazato
The only Asian restaurant in the Netherlands to have a Michelin star. A refined and classy Japanese eating experience in the heart of Amsterdam.
Visaandeschelde
Really, one the best plaices for seafood in Amsterdam. Ahem. Plenty of variety, all of consistently high quality. A real catch.
Tasca Bellota
Tapas that compares to the best you would get in Spain, with high quality ingredients and careful presentation.
Segugio
Perhaps the best Italian restaurant in Amsterdam, Segugio serves up big flavours in big, airy feeling space that you will want to linger in.
Pata Negra
Permanently busy, which goes to show how much people go for the authentic spanish feel Pata Negra is selling. Expect to be jostled.
Mazzo
Housed inside a former Amsterdam nightclub, Mazzo is the latest venture from restaurant and hospitality group IQ Creative.
Looks
Not in the place you would expect to find it, Looks is trendy dining at its best with a menu that changes week on week.
Le Ciel Bleu
The only Amsterdam restaurant with two Michelan stars, this is the ultimate in hedonism - luxury married to pleasure.
La Rive
All the fuss and fabulous food you should expect from the Amstel Hotel - the opulent service and surrounds only serve to accent the Michelin-starred food.
Envy
At Envy, your meal will be built up from tiny but exquisitely formed dishes, sort of like a premium tapas place. Great food in a great location.
De Struisvogel
A treat of a dining experience with a rich, pan-European menu. Look past the fact that the diners are squeezed into a small cellar and enjoy the stylish rustic décor.
De Kas
To put it bluntly, one of the most revered restaurants in the country, you can sit in the glasshouse from which it is named and enjoy the surprise of your meal.
De Belhamel
A converted grocer's shop, De Belhamel serves high-end European dishes in beautiful art-deco surrounds.
D’Vilff Vlieghen
A chance to taste really high-end Dutch cuisine in a grand old building. Never mind the name translates as 'the five flies,' this place is worth investigating.
Chez Georges
In a world full of concept restaurants and experimental flavours, Chez Georges is a breath of fresh air serving high-end Franco-Belgian fare in a homely little restaurant.
Bridges
A newly opened restaurant (as of 2010), Bridges serves some spectacular seafood with wildly diverging influences, from France to India.
Blue Pepper
Blue Pepper is an Indonesian restaurant that refuses to soften its flavours for the European palate, resulting in a much more genuine, and not to mention delicious, dining experience.
Blauw aan de Wal
Hidden away in the Red Light District like an oasis of gastronomic serenity, Blauw ann de Wal serves classic, conventional fare done very very well.
Bird
The standout of the many Chinese and Thai restaurants that line Amsterdam's Chinatown - decent food and a nice atmosphere.
De Toren
The perfect place to retreat to for a romantic, sumptuous weekend. Try not to wallow in the included Jacuzzis the entire stay.
Mazzo Amsterdam
The latest venture from hospitality group IQ Creative, Mazzo Amsterdam is hauling in the praise for its refined menu of Italian classics.
