Hg2 : The Hedonist

Grillage

A few yards to the left of Chocolate Room and up the stairs by an incongruous Big Ben replica is Grillage, a seriously sophisticated restaurant catering to Astana’s high-rollers. The restaurant is smaller than its Almaty sister but is kitted out in the same chic French style, with muted colours, beautiful furniture, chandeliers and soft white drapes. Russophiles will enjoy the Russian menu, which includes classics such as solyanka, Olivier salad, blinis and beef stroganoff, and is rather more reasonable than the European offering. Choose from a lavish selection including foie gras, buratta, risotto with saffron and chicken livers, pasta with ceps, Mediterranean sea bass, black cod with miso, confit duck and stuffed quail with pan-fried pears. Finish with an intriguing dark or white chocolate potato, or strawberry soup with vanilla ice-cream, and blow the budget with wine from the short but extortionate list, where nothing is available for less than five figures. Expensive, but worth it.
