When the old Metkarting closed its doors back in 2005, a generation of Bakuvians shed a collective tear. Towards the end of 2009, however, the all new, improved Metkarting mark two was unveiled at a brand spanking new location and featuring a shiny, all new go-kart track, with shiny, all new (and disturbingly speedy) go-karts, an outdoor area, with sun loungers, plunge pool and a beer terrace and, crucially, Baku’s biggest centrally located nightclub. The club is a glorious temple to all things kitsch, with a chessboard floor, mirror balls – and mirror walls – white leatherette banquette seating, neon signs, pop-arty canvasses and staff in gold and silver lamé shirts. The sushi is good, the music is straight-forward, accessible poppy dance and MTV classics, special themed nights are on the up and the drinks are at an ok price – so far, so potentially very good indeed. What remains to be seen though, is if they can pull in enough of a crowd to fill this huge venue come summertime. We seriously hope so.
