Santa Caterina Cuines
What makes the Santa Caterina Cuines restaurant so special is its incredible location inside the finest food market in the city, the Mercat Santa Caterina. Incredibly clean, the market offers the freshest fruit, vegetables, meats and fish and is far less touristy than those located in Barceloneta or off the Ramblas, for example. So after wandering the endless aisles of delectable local produce, rather than cooking it yourself, just stroll into Santa Caterina Cuines and sample the goods cooked by some of Barcelona’s finest. The menu is very cleverly designed so that you can choose both the type of food you want and its regional orientation. So if you want seafood, for example, you can have it in the form of pasta, sushi, or even as a dessert. The ambience is buzzing and especially good at lunch, with the day’s specials flashed on a screen above the chefs like a trading floor. The bar is neatly tucked away at the back of the entrance so those drinking rather than eating don’t take over the restaurant and, once inspired by the often simple but really delicious food, you’re sure to wander back into the food market and splurge – but do note that it’s a morning market and the only afternoon it’s open is on Thursdays.
