Der Freischwimmer opens 10 months of the year (March-December) and this pleasant Berlin bar can be found on a permanently moored barge. Not the most obvious choice, as the entrance improbably lurks behind a petrol station (oddly enough home to another bar) through an old rusty gate on a pier, which also hosts water-sports and some allotments. Those who make it down the garden path will find a predominantly eclectic young Kreuzberg crowd, drawn to the laid-back, flea-market decorated living room vibe. During summer months, drinkers recline on the outside decks, often as a prelude to the Club der Visionäre located opposite, but when the weather turns cold, they retreat inside to huddle in front of a log fire in the cosy cabin on deck. A basic menu of fish ‘n’ chips and other snacks is available, but it’s all about the location with Freischwimmer.
