Hg2 : The Hedonist

A Hedonist’s guide to…

Cape Town

Mercury Live & Lounge
Despite its slightly frayed appearance, Mercury is an extremely popular performance space, particularly of the rock 'n' roll variety; drinks specials abound, so come enjoy the buzz and watch some serious performers bring down the house.
DecoDance
Everyone likes a bit of cheese when they've had a few, which is where Decodance Underground steps in (in glittery 80s-style disco shoes no less).
Trinity
Waiting Room
Despite what it suggests in its name, there's not much waiting or sitting at The Waiting Room; in fact you'll be on your feet all night with a dance floor, a roster of regular DJ sessions and a bohemian 'throw-your-hands-in-the-air-like-you-just-don'
Leopard Room
One of the best places to watch the sun go down; just shield your eyes from the leopard print overload.
Polana
Pre- or post-dinner drinks are what Polana's all about, and it would be a shame to go straight home after dinner, right?
The Opal Lounge
Precious like its namesake stone, the Opal Lounge is every bit as stylish and sumptuous as you'd expect, with a sharp-suited crowd to match.
Zula Sound Bar
Intimate and low-key, Zula channels a mellow vibe; enjoy an excellent variety of music and events from funk and ska to stand-up comedy and performance poetry - definitely a venue worth experiencing at least once.
Crew Bar
With bar staff that don't look like they've stepped off a seedy porn shoot and a crowd that's a diverse mix of beautiful people, Crew is threatening to usurp all other contenders to become Cape Town's number-one gay club. Bronx better watch its back.
Asoka
A sophisticated spot for cocktails and tapas; the porn star martini is a must-drink.
Cape Town Jazz Festival
Billed as 'African's Grandest Gathering', the Cape Town Jazz Fest is recognised as one of the five best music festivals in the world. The world-class set list contains a balanced mixture of African and international artists, and it is a cultural even
Rocking the Daisies
As suggested by its name Rocking the Daisies is the kind of three-day festival that attracts both hip and hippy music lovers.
The Assembly
Fostering South African talent The Assembly ensures its acts work the room with the best sound equiment in the country.
Fiction DJ Bar
Fact or Fiction? We go with Fiction every time: where the music is seriously cool, the crowd is seriously dressed and the doormen are seriously tough.
Galaxy/Westend
A true classic never dies, as proven by Cape Town's oldest club Galaxy. To infinity and beyond.
Rick’s Cafe Americain
Rick's Café Américain draws on inspiration from the film Casablanca, though the hip factory is turned up a notch or two to create a space that is cosy yet incredibly chic.
Alba
While it's glitz and glamour all the way at Alba, this cocktail bar is extremely welcoming and friendly.
The Hidden Cellar
The Hidden Cellar is a melting pot of young talent and is where music conversation and the beer that fuels both comes together in style.
House of Rasputin
The club looks almost as good as the girls at House of Resputin. Almost.
Bar Code
Whatever floats your boat - be it leather or uniforms - Bar Code will provide with male-only fetish nights to suit every sordid (but legal) taste.
Outdoor Trance Parties
Dance like nobody is watching at these high-octane music events. Just don't go sober.
Fez Club
If you've a thing for Morroco, then enter here to be transported to a souk-styled world of decadent, Arabic-esque partying.
Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts
Situated in the stunning surroundings of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, these summer concerts are the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday sipping wine in the sunshine and soaking up some top-rate tunes.
Mavericks
Fitted with everything you would expect and a bit more VIP rooms and private booths are also available
Balkanology
As Cape Town's must-attend annual party, this event proves that one-night stands are sometimes underrated.
Raya Lounge
We're inclined to think that Raya Lounge serves up some of the best cocktails in the city. Care to disagree?
Mother City Queer Project
Welcome to the biggest annual costume ball in Africa. Dress up or ship out.
Teazers
Teazers is a strip club without pretence; semi-clad girls swinging around well-oiled poles. End of.
