Four Seasons at Bosphorus

Istanbul received a pat on the back when it achieved the accolade of being the only city in mainland Europe to boast two Four Seasons: the luxury brand’s second sumptuous hotel was built on the banks of the Bosphorus in 2008. It remains more amenity-rich and business-like than its sister hotel in Sultanahmet, with many guests booking a two-centre Istanbul old ‘n’ new experience (the hotel is happy to shuttle you and your bags by speedboat between the two). The 150 guestrooms and suites are contemporary Ottoman – think sofas and art alaturka but nothing too outlandish, and be aware that not all rooms overlook the Bosphorus. Suites are a step up, with high ceilings and hardwood floors. The three-bedroom Atik Pasha suite is a 375-square-metrre fun palace with potentate pretensions. It’s the communal areas that separate this hotel from the row of five-star hotels in Beikta. Several hamams and spa zones line the city’s largest indoor swimming pool, and outside there’s another massive pool surrounded by Ottoman gazebos and sun loungers.
