You pretty much know what to expect from a hotel called “Shangri-La”; we’re talking five-star amenities, lashings of silk and marble, and flawless service. And on those counts, the Shangri-La Bosphorus is happy to provide. So, while we’re not saying the Shangri-La Bosphorus is the mythical utopia, we’re saying that, at least in terms of places to stay in Istanbul, you could do worse than this luxurious waterfront (the views out over the Bosphorus Strait are beautiful) hotel.
Walking into the lobby is visually arresting (as befitting an outpost of the opulent Shangri-La empire), decorated as it is with a two-storey high chandelier. But more subtle are the delicate Asian touches found in the decor throughout, from silk screens to the odd bit of lacquer here and there. Similarly, the 186 rooms and suites are outfitted in supremely serene shades of grey, cream and caramel. In fact, the biggest splash of colour in the rooms will most likely be from the bright blue of the Bosphorus through the window. Here, you’ll find Bvlgari toiletries, thread counts in the multiple hundreds, and in some cases, private outdoor terraces.
Elsewhere in the Shangri-La Bosphorus, guests can choose between Mediterranean, Asian, and Cantonese cuisine in the on-site restaurants, before heading for a cocktail in the chic Le Bar. There’s also a fitness centre (the better for working off the indulgences in the hotel’s restaurants) and CHI, The Spa, which offers hammam treatments for those desiring even more pampering.
