Hg2 : The Hedonist

Islamic Arts Museum

The gloriousness of this museum’s building didn’t do any favours for its first owner, Ibrahim Pasa, Grand Vezir to Süleyman I. The Sultan was convinced by his scheming wife Roxelana to get rid of Ibrahim whose vaunting ambition, she felt, was symbolised by the grandeur of his home. The deed was done via ritual strangulation, a common theme in medieval Ottoman high society. Now this old palace overlooking the Hippodrome houses a collection of assorted examples of Islamic arts: manuscripts, carpets, miniatures, woodwork, metalwork and glasswork, which originated from all corners of the Empire. Especially notable are old, large and glorious Seljuk and Ottoman mosque carpets.
