This popular Bairro Alto watering-hole was once a rough and ready tasca. Despite renovation, the original marble counter and tables remain. An old-fashioned cash register dominates the bar in all its glory, while blue and white tiles add rustic charm.
rnEnjoying a favourable position opposite Fragil, Portas Largas is known traditionally as a gay bar. In recent years the in-crowd has found new breeding-ground, and the bar attracts a mixture of local workers, tourists and casual drinkers. Most choose to slouch with a beer in the doorway; it’s a good vantage-point for surveying passers-by. Although endearing, the scruffy interior can feel uncomfortable on a quiet night.
