Behind This Wall
As you might guess from the name, there’s more to Behind This Wall than meets the eye. A welcome addition to Hackney’s nightlife scene, this hidden basement bar serves central London-standard cocktails and oysters worthy of a more princely postcode.
At first glance, décor appears in its final stages of construction. But don’t be fooled. The placement of Ikea-style wooden panelling and a simple vinyl player for entertainment is aesthetic creativity at play, as owners tune down the ostentatious cocktail-oyster bar image for a more alternative East London audience.
A standard weekday night proves the success of this notion. The clientele is varied – groups of friends fresh from the office mingle with Hackney hipsters and loved up couples. And, with an ‘oyster happy hour’ between 6pm and 7pm every day (oysters are just £1 a pop), it’s easy to see the appeal.
The oyster selection changes daily, while the bar menu of oyster poke bowls and snacks is updated seasonally. Cocktails, meanwhile, are original and innovative, with a smoky Vieux over Manhattan that actually smokes. The oyster theme creeps back into the Hail Mary, a cocktail that blends Scotch with tomato, beetroot, celery and pickle juice, and, a surprise guest, clam chowder oyster.
