Shake Shack

It’s no surprise that the hype surrounding the first London outpost of Shake Shack measures at fever-pitch levels. First established in New York in 2004, the restaurant’s concept – a casual-but-still sophisticated take on the classic American diner burger – has proved enormously popular. Die-hard devotees of the chain and new converts alike should be pleased with the fare here. Consistent with the New York offerings, the menu includes the classic wax-paper wrapped burgers, crinkle-cut fries (with or without cheese sauce), and a bevy of shakes and extra-thick, frozen custard “concretes.”

In addition to the classic Shackburger, there are also a few menu tweaks specifically designed for London punters. A Cumberland Sausage can be found next to the Chicago-style Shack-cago Dog on the hot dog menu. The local theme extends to the concretes as well, with a Drury Lane Jam version (made with St John Bakery biscuits) and a Union Shack offering (peppered with shavings of Paul A Young chocolate).

Though Shake Shack London’s location in the tourist-packed Market Building in Covent Garden means that the famous queues are sure to be replicated here, rest assured that the burger at the end is decidedly worth the wait.
