The Diner Shoreditch
Americana in London isn’t as easy to find these days (can’t imagine why), so for fans of all things starry and stripy, this most authentic of US-style diners in London and its sister branch in Soho (18 Ganton Street, W1, 020 7287 8962) have made a timely appearance on the snacking scene. Decked out with comfy booths and serving up classic diner fare – from burgers in baskets to blueberry pancakes, all washed down with cocktails and bottomless cups of cwarfee – both venues manage to be refreshingly non-gimmicky, despite the painstakingly adhered-to diner theme; even the staff are mostly genuine rockabilly types. Seventeen – count ’em! – ‘burger and dog’ options should cater to all tastes, but be warned – while they look very reasonably priced, all the sides and sauces cost extra so the price of a plateful can soon mount up. The maltshakes, ‘hardshakes’ (with ‘liquor’) and all-day breakfasts are also a big draw; corned-beef hash perhaps intended for diner historians only. Theme-phobes should try the takeaway menu.
