Ella Canta is Mexican super-chef Martha Ortiz’s new London restaurant, situated in the InterContinental Park Lane in what used to be the tiki-tastic Trader Vics. Ortiz is best known for her restaurant Dulce Patria that has become highly recognised and sneaks into Latin America’s Top 50 restaurants. The modern Mexican cooking at Ella Canta is beautiful to look at, the colours of the dishes and the inventive crockery are works of art. The food is well executed, but sometimes the more robust flavours takeover the dish, a tomato granita overpowers the sea bass, while the black mole drowned the duck.
The cocktail list is much more interesting, and builds on “Mexico’s Gifts to the World” – there’s a wonderful margarita with a double-smoked tequila and a Negroni that adds a little kick of Mexican spice. The interior is exactly what you would expect from its Park Lane/Mayfair location, and the abundance of wood matches the nature’s gifts focus of the food and cocktail list.
