Zuma is a contemporary Japanese restaurant in London conceived by a London-based German chef Reiner Becker. With outposts in Hong Kong, Istanbul and Dubai, Zuma has led the way in the globalization of the jetset. Opened way back in 2002, Reiner Becker’s Knightsbridge Japanese was immediately an ambitious proposition, its interior a striking mixture of glass, stone and wood and the menu made it clear that it was taking on Nobu. An overnight destination for the very rich and the very thin, the bar and lounge became an instant scene. Eating alone at the sushi counter is perhaps the best place to watch it all unfold. The menu is divided into small dishes and salads, sushi and sashimi, robata grill bits and pieces, and what are labelled ‘Zuma’ dishes that comprise east meets west combinations such as seared miso marinated foie gras with umeboshi compote. It’s all as expensive as it sounds. Make someone else pay if you can.
