Is there anything that the folks at Gjusta can’t make? It seems not. The menu here runs the gamut from fresh-baked pastries, breads, and breakfast to house-smoked brisket and grilled octopus. And before you go thinking that the quality may dip across such a wealth of offerings, take our word for it – it doesn’t.
Gjusta is a bakery, deli and cafe rolled into one delicious package. In this vast space in Venice, they bake, smoke, roast, and generally turn ideas of what you’d previously thought a “bakery” was upside down. Here, you could opt for one of their carefully crafted sandwiches, like the Smoked Brisket Banh Mi (served in a fresh baguette with pickled daikon, carrots and cucumber, plenty of coriander, chili dressing and a garlic aioli), or build your own sandwich filled with your choice of deli deliciousness. You could even stop by Gjusta for some kitchen staples, like a loaf of crispy, tangy, airy sourdough. Or peruse the prepared food section: just take a number, get in line, and use the queuing time to try and figure out what you’re going to order.
We’d say you could just stop by to pick up something small, like a cookie (and those are good), but who are we kidding? Stepping inside Gjusta is like falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland – here, up is down, so a “small” purchase will, in reality, be anything but. You won’t care though. It’s all so good that after the first bite, you’ll be wondering when you can tumble down this way again.
