Sister restaurant to the wildly popular ramen joint Tsujita – also found in West LA’s Little Osaka neighbourhood – Sushi Tsujita specialises in mouthwatering, high calibre sushi. The menu itself is largely Omakase (Chef’s Choice), with an assortment of sushi, ranging from Uni sourced from nearby Santa Barbara to Japanese barracuda. And although prices are high for the Omakase, Chef Shigeru Kato’s skills and uncompromising vision are undeniable, with rare dishes like cucumber roe appearing on the menu, not to mention the fin-slapping freshness of the ingredients.
A small but carefully considered menu of wines and Japanese beers, also features a selection of sakes to accompany the highly accomplished food; the outdoor patio area in front of the restaurant is a popular setting for aperitifs before dinner. Inside, a large crystal chandelier draws the eye into what is otherwise a contemporary bamboo-filled space. The restaurant is bijou in size, but thankfully, unlike its ramen relative, Sushi Tsujita does take reservations.
