Los Angeles Zoo is small-ish as zoo’s come, but consequently it is easy to navigate and has a wonderful collection of animals, particularly primates. Time your trip carefully: midday visits can get hot in the summer, and zoo workers start putting animals away for the night at 4pm. If animals aren’t your thing, and increasingly there is a backlash, then the botanical gardens are wonderful, full of colour and excellent to keep kids engaged, although perhaps not as much as a hungry lion or an animated chimp…
