Behind the rather unprepossessing interior of this crumbling 18th-century Madrid mansion, right on the bustling Chueca mainstay of Calle Hortaleza, lies this affordable Hostal Oxum an oasis of simple but elegant calm. The friendly new owner has personally designed all the furnishings in the eight chic, minimalist rooms and had them made up to order. The standard rooms are somewhat on the small side, but at this price you really can’t complain. All rooms have en-suite showers and every detail has been thought of – fully equipped kitchenette, Wi-Fi, iPod dock, air con and even a pet bed come as standard. Airport transfers, temporary gym membership, pay as you go Spanish mobile and a mini laptop also available by arrangement. Unusually for Madrid, a simple breakfast is included in the room rate, though you may prefer to stumble out to one of the many charming local cafés. For price and location, Hostal Oxum really can’t be beaten.
