Hg2 : The Hedonist

Hotel Abalu

The younger generation has seized the reigns at Hotel Abalu, with two brothers taking over what once was their parents’ hostel and refurbishing it into one of Madrid’s intriguing boutique hotels (indeed, mama y papa still lend a hand in the café). Perfect for a naughty weekend away, the 16 rooms at Hotel Abalu occupy the ground and first floors of this quiet building, with some even lacking a window, giving you a real feeling of being hidden away from the outside world. The rooms have all been individually decorated by the brothers, who have scoured the globe for furniture and accessories – all of which can be purchased.  The interior was even created by designer Luis Delgado, who has also designed the main collection for the Spanish boutique store Blanco.  The suites all have their own Apple Mac Minis with huge drop-down projection screens, while electronic picture frames outside the rooms display stills of what’s inside (they’re not CCTV, as many guests first think, somewhat horrified). The only complaint would be the location, in Malasaña, an area where certain streets are fine, but others are a little grim, with prostitution and drug abuse a problem. That said, if you’re prepared to brave it, this quirky and original place to stay in Madrid is well worth a look.
