Theatro

The man who started the Es Saadi hotel – Frenchman Jean Bauchet – once managed the famed Moulin Rouge in Paris. After building a casino then a hotel here, he also built a theatre and put on not just plays but also musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie. The theatre closed down a few years ago, but was re-opened at the end of 2002 in its new guise as nightclub, Theatro, overseen by Bauchet’s grandson Jean-Alexandre. Theatro has had an upmarket refurbishment, giving the interior a much more modern look (with designer furniture, strategically placed tables and a large and very expensive bar) while retaining its original structure.

At weekends Theatro offers some seriously good times, with live drummers, sexy dancers on the stage and some pretty good house music. It can also become seriously packed. You can book a table in advance, which comes with a bottle of spirits – at a substantial cost of course. Housed beside the casino, the plethora of top-of-the-range sports cars parked outside testifies to the kind of monied, ‘up-for-it’ clientele who frequent Theatro.
