As one of the best bars in Milan, Cuore is a plastic fantastic time-warp into kitsch 1960s Americana.
Star Trek teleporters around the DJ decks play on the era’s fascination with space travel; and a trailer-park tableau – with vintage furniture around a TV set showing cult films such as Psycho and The Sound of Music – plays on ‘apple pie’ domesticity.
Hawaii Five-0 style cocktails – Pina Coladas, Mai Tais, Blue Hawaiians – come garnished with flowers from friendly barmen in Pan-Am crew shirts at the pink diner-style bar.
Cuore’s sense of humour is refreshingly offbeat by Milanese standards: even the name Cuore (heart) is apparently just a joke. Linked with Atomic (see Drink) and Rocket (see Party), there’s a common, alternative outlook – and retro décor.
Gay-friendly, free of lounge music, and even with vegan aperitivo on request, this is inclusive escapism into peace and love.
