ITC Maratha

Hotels in Mumbai don’t come much more classic than the ITC Maratha – it’s super-sized, opulent and almost too glitzy for its own good. The guestrooms are luxurious, traditional and mix handcrafted furniture with more contemporary creature comforts such as plasma TVs and massage chairs.

The ITC chain of Indian hotels is usually better known for its restaurants – one of the best restaurants in Mumbai is Kebabs and Kurries at the ITC Grand Central, the ITC Maratha’s sister hotel – but foodies can indulge here, too. Guests gorge at on-site restaurant Peshwari, where delicious, spicy north Indian cuisine is dished up with oodles of self-confidence, or at Dum Pukht (best not to try saying this after one too many), which continues the royal dining traditions of the Nawab of Awadh.

The Peshwa Pavilion, meanwhile, needs to be seen to be believed: expect an atrium setting with enormous palm trees, richly-designed carpets and plenty of ornate wall designs. And with the whole shabang located out by the airport in Sahar, it’s perfect for those who don’t want to be right in the thick of things.
