Martha Washington Hotel
When the Martha Washington Hotel was first inaugurated in 1903, it was open exclusively to women, and later housed luminaries ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt to Louise Brooks. But following its recent restoration under the Chelsea Hotels group, the hotel bears the historic moniker alongside a brand new tagline: “Exclusively for everyone.”
It’s true that the hotel – with its warm retro ambiance, its clean interior design courtesy of Annabelle Selldorf, its destination eateries – would appeal to most. Marta, the lobby restaurant and pizzeria headed up by Danny Meyer and chef Nick Anderer, is as unmissable as that dream team suggests. As for the rooms at the Martha Washington Hotel? They’re classically New York. Read: not always generously proportioned, but certainly stylish. And well located: the NoMad neighbourhood, barely extant just a few years ago, is now one of Manhattan’s key quadrants of cool.
