You can’t beat the canalside charm of Le Sporting. Young entrepreneurs Antoine and Sébastien have compiled a delicious seasonal menu of contemporary French cooking. They’ve also carefully put together an innovative wine list, posted on a propped-up blackboard, from small but fashionable vineyards across France. Handsome and hip regulars, on first-name terms with the staff, come waltzing in for coffee or aperitifs (so don’t be too offended when they get better service than you do). The décor manages an informal chic: the simply painted walls, original oak floor boards and black leather banquettes are offset by an orange globe and the retro font on an old Tarzan film poster. During the day the interior is flooded with natural light through large sliding windows that open up onto a picturesque terrace.
