G-Rough is all about the rough luxe style. It’s right there in the name. And it’s gorgeous. The juxtaposition of the rough walls, the historical building pared right back and set against interiors that exemplify the best of Italian design. There are buttery leather chairs, sumptuously soft velvets, and warm polished wood that gleams. Some floors are decked out in historic tile, others are parquet. Some rooms feature modern chandeliers, others attention-grabbing original art pieces. There’s high-speed internet, kitchenettes, and stylish living rooms – the accommodations here, after all, are suites. All the better to pretend you live in this kind of luxury year-round.
The suites here are a great jumping off point for exploring the Centro Storico, or historic centre of Rome. G-Rough is just down the road from the Pantheon (how often will you get to experience that in life?) and right next to the Piazza Navona. The building that houses G-Rough is itself historic, having been built in the 17th century and renovated in the 19th.
And you can really feel it as you walk around, whether you’re hanging out in your suite, or down in G-Bar on the ground floor. This wine “gallery” serves coffee and a delicious selection of Italian wines, from local and niche cellars, as well as acting as a performance space from time to time. Here, there’s a definite leaning towards to “luxe” end of the rough luxe spectrum, with the bar’s gleaming golden brickwork. It’s a dazzling spot to have a pre-dinner drink. But then, with all of Rome right outside G-Rough’s historic doors, you do have to try and tear yourself away. The Eternal City awaits…
