You know you’re in for a treat when you have to find the entrance to a cocktail bar. It’s usually a promise of a very memorable evening. Or not – if the drinks are potent. Found down a hallway behind a nondescript door at Restaurant Niklas, Kåken more than delivers in terms of great drinks and lashings of atmosphere. And the memories? Well, they wholly depend on the type of evening you opt for, and how much you partake of the delicious food and drinks on offer.
Inside there’s a definite speakeasy vibe, which has endeared it to the city’s creative set. It’s all wood panelling, leather banquettes, and twinkling lights sparkling off polished mirrors. But the prohibition-era mystique doesn’t just stop at the interior decor (although it has been carried off with aplomb). Just cast your eye down the cocktail menu and it’s craft offerings as far as you see. There are other libations, of course, but cocktails are hard to resist. The food, meanwhile, has a feel of the American South, thanks to the predominance of BBQ. We’re talking ribs, pickles, coleslaw – the works.
But outside on the patio, Kåken shifts gears. With live music, DJ sets, and lots of beautiful people dancing, it’s a vibrant place to while away the hours until the early morning.
