You wouldn’t class the Ivy with the other clubs in Sydney, it is in a class of its own. This multi-levelled ode to drinking and mischief begins in the downstairs main bar, which opens up to a huge courtyard with white marbled bars and a Japanese maple tree. Upstairs there are more bars (some require getting past additional clipboard-toting staff) and even an artificial grassed area complete with outdoor showers where poseur clubbers can amp up the naughtiness. The weekly Pure Ivy night attracts Sydney’s elite social set, with the city’s better-known DJs titillating the crowds – which can number up to hundreds on busy nights. The venue can fit up to 1,000, meaning it’s also inadvertently one of the city’s most promising pick-up joints. Word has it that the downstairs area is the best place to make friends – but they may not be long-lasting ones, if you catch our drift. After circling prey downstairs, try your luck upstairs on level five, home to Ivy’s infamous Miami-style bar, complete with a swimming pool and cabanas, but don’t count on making it past the door unless you’ve scrubbed up well for the occasion.
