If you love natural history and dinosaurs, or simply want to terrorise your partner with the sight of a Goliath Tarantula (a South American spider that can grow as large as a dinner plate), then the Australian Museum is definitely one of things to do in Sydney. But it’s not just fossils and specimens – this heritage sandstone building also hosts the stunning annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibitions, where you can ogle at photographic masterpieces and engage in workshops to demystify all those buttons on your SLR. It’s almost too easy to wander in and have a poke around – it’s located right opposite Hyde Park in the centre of Sydney. What’s more, the museum recently introduced super-special behind-the-scenes tours, which cost upwards of $130 per adult. With only one per cent of the museum’s contents on display, these personal tours offer a peek into the wings that hold the rest of the incredible treasures that are usually reserved for staff and researchers.
