Owned by affable publican James Couche, it’s one of the best-known pubs in Sydney, with a shock of foliage spiralling over the entrance and drinkers converging for beers and chats outside on the footpath. With its wood panelling, English paraphernalia, antiques and old-stone fireplace, the ground floor bar is as welcoming and comfortable as any in country England, with a bounty of beer, cider and ale on tap. There’s also a dart room, upstairs levels that open during the evening and a restaurant that serves quintessential pub grub – think pork pies, pickled eggs and bangers and mash. It’s also only a stroll away from Paddington Bowling Club, where you can have a wobbly game of barefoot lawn bowls in the sun. What’s not to love?
