Sometimes you need a great glass of wine. But herein lies a problem. Some spots expect you to be able to detect the grassy scents on the nose, and the hints of kiwi on the palette. And if you don’t, they’ll educate you. Other places haven’t given the wine much thought at all. Neither is what you want at the end of a work day. But that’s where The Winery comes in. They really know their wine, filling their award-winning list with wonderful bottles, and don’t expect you to do anything other than enjoy it.
Broken down into helpful sections that are as informative as they are tempting, you can orient yourself through the list by figuring out what kind of wine you’re craving. Fancy a white that’s “rich and stately”? Then a 2005 Semillon/Sauvignon blend from Yarra Yarra Vineyards could be just the thing. Or a “light and sexy red”? The list has seven “styles” you should become more familiar with. But there’s also a great showing of alternatives, from sherry and cider to beer, for those not in the mood for the wine.
Happily, while great wine is, unsurprisingly, at the heart of The Winery, they’ve put almost as much attention into the food menu. Who doesn’t love nibbles with their wine? There are sharing plates of squid and arancini, to name but a few, that’ll sate most cravings. But for something more substantial, they’ve got a roster of dishes, ranging from Wagyu rump steak to vegan cauliflower steak.
The indoor spaces are atmospheric (all exposed brick, leather and velvet upholstery, and an abundance of colourful art and lush greenery), but the al fresco area is where you’ll want to be. Lit with fairy lights and the flickering glow of candles, this is where any lingering work-a-day issues will disappear. So order another glass and let The Winery work its magic.
