Hg2 : The Hedonist

Occupation Museum

The period between 1940 and 1991 brought two major military occupations and much suffering to the people of Estonia. The impressive Occupation Museum, opened in 2003, is run by a foundation whose aim is to keep the history of this time alive, documenting the ‘catastrophes and cataclysms. and to find detailed proof about the past based on facts and analysis’.
rnIt’s a startling reminder of recent history – which few Estonians have forgotten but will often not talk about. The museum uses artefacts, audio-visual displays and sound recordings to build a picture of those troubled times, and it also shows how ordinary people got through their normal lives in tough conditions. Housed in a striking glass and steel structure on the edge of the Old Town, the museum has aroused controversy as well as admiration, and well deserves a visit.
