A charming design hotel, the Plattenhof is tucked away amongst the University neighbourhood’s grand 19th century buildings, ensuring a constant stream of scholarly visitors alongside Kreis 5 creative types drawn by its style credentials. The location feels out of the way, but as it’s such a small city, none of Zurich’s hotels are really out of the centre, so Niederdorf is only a ten minute walk and the Kunsthaus is practically on the doorstep.
Owners Thomas and Beatrice Sos have created a fresh, minimalist aesthetic: white walls, bespoke dark wood Italian-designed desks-cum-seats, low wooden beds and multi-coloured stage lighting. A recent refurbishment bequeathed some of the superior rooms with immensely chic white beds and desks, lattice wood panels inset with coloured glass above the beds and smart white-tiled bathrooms.
The staff makes all guests feel at home, there is a library of DVDs to borrow and the concierge is full of suggestions of things to do and places to party. But should that feel like too much effort, stagger downstairs to join locals at the hotel’s stylish bar and Sento restaurant.
