Following a four-month facelift, Orient-Express’ iconic Cape Town hotel, The Mount Nelson, has unveiled its glamourously-restyled and renamed restaurant: Planet. Upon entering, guests tread the Swarovski-crystal-tiled walkway, carpeted with a glittering map of the constellations, while the walls are accented with pictures of the zodiac. Three chandeliers emulate the illusion of shooting stars, and diners can gaze upon all this celestial splendour as they sip their pre- or post-dinner cocktails from the comfort of soft, elegant sofas in the lounge. Outside, the terrace has been extended and underfloor heating installed, so that guests can enjoy their meals al fresco under the wide African sky, surrounded by the sumptuous hotel gardens. Perfectly complimenting this ambiance, changes to the menu have also been introduced by Chef Rudi Liebenberg, featuring smoked crocodile, crayfish ceviche with Namibian red crab remoulade and rooibos-cured ostrich. Other popular items still feature on the menu, including Rudi’s legendary springbok pie, indulgent vegan dishes and plenty of sweet treats. Planet Restaurant is destined to feature on any hedonist’s list of Cape Town gastronomic hot spots, from the moment you step onto the breathtaking carpet until your last crumb of soft chocolate-centred baked meringue. Bliss.
