Stenciled surreptitiously on a sliding metal door down an ancient lane in the shadow of the Bell Tower are the numbers ‘3+1‘. If you don’t know it’s there you’ll never find this über hip, family-run four-room establishment in Beijing. Once you’ve surmounted its speakeasy-like location, a surprisingly warm and white contemporary interior awaits you. Upon arrival you are given an iPod shuffle for use during your stay pre-programmed with chill-out grooves and a set of keys including instructions to the proprietor’s popular neighborhood bars and restaurants. The ceilings of guestrooms are 20-feet high and each has a small deck while the décor includes red Kartell Philippe Starck Ghost Lamps and vintage photographs as well as tchochkes from local designers that brighten up the factory chic minimalism. Although there is no room service per se (besides cocktails), there is a complimentary fridge with soft drinks and an elegant breakfast in bed is prepared with fresh juice, eggs and pastries. Our pick is Jade – named after the owner’s daughter – the largest room, which has a deluxe steeping tub and lounge area.
