The summer has quietly faded and winter is beginning to approach, our thoughts switching from the sizzling beaches of Ibiza to the roaring fires of the Alps and where to ski this coming season. Zermatt has long been an Hg2 favourite, with its picture postcard pretty town in the shadow of the Matterhorn and, of course, some of the best skiing in Switzerland. For some of the best places to stay on the slopes, take a look at our list of luxury ski chalets in Zermatt.
Chalet Zermatt Peak
In a resort crammed full of amazing properties The Peak arguably tops the lot, in more ways than one. Standing proud, like a sentinel overlooking the resort, seemingly dropped, job lot, direct from Beverly Hills, this stunner is a million miles away from the archetypal Swiss ski chalet. Superlatives are redundant here, it’s a billionaire’s pad with no expense spared to achieve the desired effect. Huge walls of glass allow the outside in to form a symbiotic relationship with the winter wonderland beyond, taking full advantage of its wonderful location and making it arguably the best luxury ski chalet in Zermatt.
Chalet Les Anges
The interiors of Les Anges are a symphony in wood. Beautiful honey toned timbers are utilised, forest like, throughout the accommodation to create a wonderful, calming ambience, while the spacious open plan living area, on split levels, further enhances the feeling of wellbeing. The grand piano takes centre stage and anyone who can knock out a tune or two will marvel at the acoustics. The terraces and balconies offer fabulous vantage points to take in the spectacular scenery that surrounds this beautiful chalet. Les Anges is wonderfully understated and a complete contrast to the bling of The Peak.
The Backstage Chalet
This accommodation is a one-off, much like its designer and owner Heinz Julen, an architect, artist, sculptor and all round creative genius. Who on earth would ever have thought of a hot tub that rises up through the ceiling, into the night sky, above the rooftops of Zermatt? only Heinz. That feature is worth the admission price alone. The rest of the chalet is populated with artefacts and interesting objects fashioned by his own hands. A stay in the Backstage is more than a vacation, it’s an event.
Jostling for position amongst the elite is this newcomer to the Zermatt skyline. It doesn’t shout, ‘look at me’ like The Peak, nor does it have a stand out feature to compete with The Backstage. It sings its own song. La Vue is a collection of apartments that can be rented separately or taken as a whole and the joins are seamless. The interiors are an essay in spaciousness and colour; the designers of this beautiful chalet have created wonderful interior spaces that sing with light and make a stay here good for the soul. La Vue transcends its constituent parts and proves the adage, less is more – something a little unusual among the luxury ski chalets in Zermatt.
This breathtakingly beautiful chalet has one of the finest lounges we’ve come across, not because of its size, or its ostentatiousness, but because of the warmth and comfort, not to mention the framed view of the magical Matterhorn through generously-sized windows. A spell in the lounge is like being cosseted by a cosy friendly giant, who’s eager to show you the wondrous view. As soon as you plonk yourself down in a sofa a feeling of calm pervades your soul and you find yourself lost in the sumptuousness of your surroundings.
