Sun-drenched Los Angeles is a gorgeous and glamorous destination, set right on the scenic Californian coast. The city offers visitors a staggering 25 miles of beaches, some of the country’s best restaurants, top cultural institutions, and lush natural surrounding. Despite its glitzy reputation, though, LA also caters perfectly to kids, with attractions the likes of Disneyland, The California Science Center, and the LA Zoo on offer. Below, we’ve selected five of the best hotels for those who are travelling to Los Angeles with children, which combine luxurious amenities with family-friendly offerings. Stay at one of these hotels and you’ll be fully won over by La La Land.
First up, there’s the Hotel Casa del Mar. Located in chic Santa Monica, adjacent to the famous ferris wheel and right on the seaside, the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows, installed in the rooms and in the restaurant, offer some exceptional views. This sunny, waterside spot offers plenty within its walls: Catch, the on-site restaurant, is well regarded for its menu of perfectly fresh seafood dishes, while the relaxed Lounge at Casa serves delicate sushi that’s best enjoyed alongside a cocktail. For parents, the eco-friendly Sea Wellness Spa provides relaxing massages that will cut down on any lingering stress, while kids will love splashing in the seaside pool. Located just steps from the beach, it gives families the choice of saltwater swimming or going for a freshwater dunk. The vibe at Casa del Mar is more beach club than hotel, and staff are great with kids.
A boutique home away from home, L’Ermitage Beverly Hills is renowned for its luxury and its discretion – it is, after all, a favourite amongst the city’s jet-setting A-listers. Hidden away in a tranquil, largely residential part of the neighbourhood, the hotel is still within easy access of the city’s many highlights, from beaches to shopping streets. Both kids and parents alike enjoy the rooftop swimming pool – its views of the city are hard to beat. Making it even easier for travelling families, it’s possible to order room service, check in, or check out at any time; on the day of your departure, rely on the concierge to leave you with a takeaway coffee to help kickstart your journey. The family dog can even join you at L’Ermitage, provided they’re on the smaller side (40 pounds and under) and even big families will be comfortable in the roomy bedrooms and spacious suites. Meanwhile, the fresh, California-style pizzas and homemade pasta at Livello, the on-site restaurant, are bound to be crowd-pleasers.
Mr. C Beverly Hills, launched two years ago by the Cipriani Brothers (the great grandsons of Giuseppe Cipriani, the man behind the legendary Harry’s Bar in Venice), certainly lives up to the family’s reputation for exceptional hospitality. On arrival, kids are gifted with a citrusy virgin Bellini (while adults receive a glass of the alcoholic variety); within its walls, the hotel’s decadent rooms offer Italian furniture, private patios, and photographs of Old Hollywood. Its 12 storeys mean views are part of the deal (opt for a higher-up floor, if you can) while pristine beds and oversized bathtubs are some of the perks offered by the suites. One of the touches that sets Mr. C apart is its car service, which transports guests for short journeys; its kid-friendly staffers also do their best to keep young ones contented. Other family-friendly touches include top-notch Italian food in the on-site restaurant, a 4,500-square foot pool terrace, and live jazz performances. Those under 18 are also offered complimentary stays, while the hotel stocks cribs and employs babysitters for those with very young children.
After a centrally located hotel? The Beverly Wilshire Beverly Hills, close to Rodeo Drive, is a great bet. its Michelin-starred restaurant, private pool cabanas, and on-demand car service cater to grown-ups seeking some luxury, while kids eight and under are kept happy with a stuffed animal dog, Larry, given as a gift on arrival. The hotel’s Four Seasons Spa is also family-friendly: offering a number of treatments designed with kids in mind, from the princess facial to the superhero aromatherapy massage. Parents with young kids needn’t worry, as the hotel provides babysitting services, cribs, and other extras. The hotel is also a destination for food lovers: CUT, Wolfgang Puck’s American-style steakhouse, is a favourite among LA denizens, while The Blvd provides patio-side eating. For families looking to spend the day pool-side, the Pool Bar menu has fresh offerings like smoothies, bento boxes, and others that should appeal to everyone.
Finally, for a dose of Hollywood-inspired glamour, consider booking at the Hotel Bel Air. A veritable institution in the city, the hotel’s luxurious reputation is far from adults only, and the hotel accommodates children beautifully. The recently renovated venue is lovely inside and out, and its on-site Swan Lake, home to three of the elegant birds (named Athena, Hercules, and Chloe), makes for a pretty place to take a breather. Offering seven exclusive suites, the hotel blends Old Hollywood influences with Spanish-style design, while the Spa La Prairie offers a relaxing steam room, fitness centre, and top treatments for parents looking to relax by themselves for a spell. Meanwhile, kids can enjoy exploring its 12 acres of gardens (treasure hunts can be arranged by the hotel), are provided with game-loaded iPads at the hotel restaurant, and are even offered gifts upon arrival: lipgloss for girls and sunglasses for boys. For food lovers young and old, the hotel is certainly a destination. Its Bel-Air basket, compiled by Wolfgang Puck, offers gourmet snacks alongside wine, a blanket, and thermos, while the chef’s restaurant is veritable foodie heaven. Kids can also enjoy Little Royal’s Tea on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
Kodomo.com recently launched with the aim of providing parents well-researched recommendations on where to eat, stay and play across the world with children in tow. The site provides specific information on everything from spa hotels to ski weekends, Malay suites to Apulian villas, all with family-friendly facilities in mind.
