Everyone’s heard of The Ivy, one of London’s first proper celebrity restaurants; during its heyday you couldn’t get a table for love nor money, and the paparazzi had a permanent pitch outside waiting for the latest celebrity to stumble out after having one too many glasses of Champers. Its gastronomic glory, however, was largely thanks to Mark Hix, who worked as chef director at The Ivy’s parent company, The Caprice Group. Dreaming of his own brand of fame, Hix went on to open his own restaurant in Farringdon, simply called Hix Oyster & Chop House. This was followed shortly after by the opening of Hix Oyster & Fish House in Dorset, a number of cookbooks and a regular food column at The Independent. And now with a restaurant in Soho and an outpost at Selfridges, the world, apparently, is not enough.

Eat – In London I don’t really have a favourite restaurant – it depends what mood I’m in. Sometimes it’s a cheap and cheerful Chinese, or it may be Vietnamese or a bowl of pasta or sushi. That’s why I love London, because you can eat what you want when you want.
Drink/Party – 45 Dean Street, W1D – My favourite club is the Groucho – it’s like my second home. The bar there is good, too.
Sleep – Brown’s, 33 Albemarle Street, W1S – I always stay here on New Year’s Eve, when London is closed to cars and cabs.
Shop – Oxford Street 400, W1d – The best shop in London has got to be Selfridges  – you can get almost everything under one roof and you can always get shopping inspiration by sitting in my restaurant there overlooking the handbags.
