New Year’s Eve is beckoning, so at Hg2 we’ve been pondering where to welcome 2013 in style. Whether a bit of warmth is what you’re after or something altogether different, we’ve come up with a few ideas to inspire. Check out our picks for the top destinations for New Year’s getaways.
The Mother City’s balmy climate, pristine beaches and rooftop restaurants are tempting enough in themselves, but throw in a midnight excursion to Table Mountain, with a bottle of bubbly in the cable car, and New Year’s Eve in Cape Town could certainly be a night to remember. Or, the fireworks on the V&A Waterfront draw the crowds every year, and if one party isn’t enough, the “Tweede Nuwejaar” is South Africa’s answer to Mardi Gras – when traditionally slaves were allowed a day off on 2nd January – and a parade comes out in full musical force.
Shogatsu (or Japan’s New Year to you and me) can be a quiet and solemn affair, with thousands of Buddhists flocking to various temples and shrines to make an offering and hear the temple bells ring out 108 times around midnight. For a more joyous celebration, the luxury Shangri-La Tokyo Hotel is hosting traditional Otsuzumi drummers for the countdown, a martial arts show by Bagaku, a DJ from Ibiza and Japanese cheerleaders, the Toyko Girls. Once recovered, a bullet train can whisk you up to the Nagano valley to gets some runs in at Happo’One, which hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. Or make the trek north from Tokyo to Niseko for some proper powder, with skiing until 9pm under the floodlights.
Don your winter kit and pop over the pond to join the million revellers eagerly anticipating the iconic ball drop in Times Square. Skating in Central Park may be the perfect antidote to a night of excess, if a chilly swim in the Coney Island Polar Dip seems a bit extreme to start the New Year in the Big Apple. A pastel study for Edvard Munch’s The Scream is on display at the Museum of Modern Art if you would rather escape from the ubiquitous shopping for a moment or two and hopefully the crowds will melt into obscurity.
At a warm 20 degrees, a rumba and a shot of aguardiente are the way to go in Colombia’s buzzing capital this New Year’s Eve. Andres Carne de Res now has two bacchanalian venues to choose from – the original, eclectic haven in Chia or the more central four-floored chaos where anything goes and the vibe is electric. When your head has stopped pounding, spare a moment for the Gold Museum and the Salt Cathedral at Zipaquirá to see another side to Bogota and its rituals.
Lounge by the pool or strut your stuff with the best of them on Miami’s beautiful beaches. For a bit of light relief in between the NYE festivities, explore the Art Deco District or check out Versace’s mansion – now a moorish upscale hotel and restaurant. For the best parties in town, Nikki Beach has a Venetian Carnival, Mansion Nightclub has an open bar until midnight or the city puts on a fireworks display near Ocean Drive as the clock strikes twelve.
