Paintings, art installations, videos, sculptures and photographs are routinely on display in this brand new museum, which has caused something of a stir since its opening in 2010 thanks to innovative design created by Anglo-Iraqi starchitect Zaha Hadid. Indeed, the museum is a destination in itself with curved walls, squirming cement tubes overlapped with stairs and meandering passages and exhibition halls. In a city with many layers of history and just as many museums to bear witness to them, Rome’s MAXXI museum is the most exciting new addition to the city’s cultural scene.
