Whether you go for the skiing or the après ski, the rush of adrenaline or the glittering nightlife, nowhere does winter quite like they do it in Verbier. We’ve compiled a shortlist of the top seasonal dates in the snowy sports Mecca, from Christmassy celebrations to high-intensity skiing competitions. Get ready: winter is when Verbier events really heat up.
Verbier Opening Session with Carlsberg
Celebrate the official opening of the Verbier ski season on Saturday, 7th December with an all-day and all-night party hosted by Carlsberg. After an ambitiously early start with complimentary coffee and croissants available in Le Châble from 8:30am, spend the afternoon enjoying local festivities and drinking gallons of vin chaud at the Christmas Market by the Médran. Alternatively, catch DJ Thierry K-KO Fleur de House and a paragliding demonstration at Chalet Carlsberg, followed by happy hour and live music at the Médran Café. Finish off the evening at one of several after-parties, including an event at the legendary Pub Mont Fort and one at the stylish Casbah at Hotel Farinet.
7th December, Verbier
Another event designed to kick off the start of the season, the Hotel Nevaï’s fashion show is designed for the sartorially minded. The event is intended to showcase items from Verbier designers and area fashion boutiques. Tickets cost 100CHF per person, and attendees can also opt to add on a champagne and sushi reception, three-course dinner, and an after party with the catwalk stars at The Farm Club.

The people of La Tzoumaz have persuaded Father Christmas himself to drop in at the Place Centrale before he sets off to work on his busiest night of the year. Kids can join him at 4pm to file their last-minute gift wishes, while adults can indulge in a glass of mulled wine, followed by more mulled wine and a traditional mass at the Chapelle de la Fouly, the Eglise d’Orsières or the Chapelle Ascension.

What better way to assuage the post-Christmas blues than by reflecting on art and the beauty of nature? Renowned ski photographer Melody Sky exhibits her stunning images of the slopes of Verbier on canvas and mixed media at this must-see Gallery Nanuq event.

Another raucous celebration is predicted for the La Tzoumaz Place Centrale, as locals and visitors bid farewell to 2013 in style. Join fellow revellers for drinks and merriment from 4pm, and stick around for the DJ set and live concert from 10:30pm, followed by fireworks at midnight. And guess what’s happening the next day in the central square? Restorative mulled wine, bien sûr!
31st December, La Tzoumaz, Place Centrale
Widely acclaimed as one of the leading freestyle skiing competitions in the world, Verbier Ride has become a recognized X-Games qualifier event, which attracts crowds of fearless athletes ever year. Riders meet early in the morning, from which they proceed on to a practice session and the first judged descent at midday along the rocky slopes of La Chaux. After parties, typically held at Après Ski Bar in Hotel Farinet, are the stuff of legend.
16th January, Place Médran, 1936 Verbier
For those who love the combination of perfect, powdery slopes and exhilarating tree runs, the miniature resort of Bruson has remained a well-kept secret: until now. This season sees the opening of a new direct gondola link between Bruson and Verbier’s Médran, making access quicker and easier between the two. Inaugural celebrations will involve cut-rate skiing, local food and beverage tasting, and of course, more mulled wine.
