Over the past two decades, chef Susan Spicer has been racking up accolades for her work at the elegant Bayona in the French Quarter. For Mondo, her latest venture, she found a spot near her home in Lakeview, which is as close as you get to the suburbs in New Orleans. It may be in a strip mall, but inside the modern space filled with subtle colours and light blonde wood casts an air of calm sophistication. The menu, which includes pho with duck, carnitas migas and veal grillades with grits, reflects Spicer’s relentless global curiosity. Fashionable young crowds have descended on Mondo from across the city. It remains a locals’ secret, but not for long.
