This funky little café-cum-bar tucked away on a side street by the Grand Hotel Tien Shan wouldn’t feel out of place in a cool European city like Berlin or Amsterdam. The café and a tiny shop selling vinyl are at street-level, the bar (‘DK downstairs’) is in the basement, and all are kitted out with groovy 60s- style furniture and original wall murals. The illustration theme continues in the menu, with quirky artworks by local artists featured in amongst breakfasts, salads, toasted sandwiches and pastas. There’s tea and coffee by the bucket-load and downstairs you can order well-priced cocktails and shots to drink at the bar. It’s clear that DK makes a real effort to engage and communicate with its clientele from its Facebook page, which is kept updated with details of DJ sets, live performances and film screenings – do check what’s on before you visit.
