The Cuban scene is (surprisingly, perhaps) alive and well in Almaty, with Copacabana at its core. Open Tuesday to Sunday – staying open later each night, sometimes for classes, sometimes for dinner, sometimes for live music – this Latin lounge is all about getting down and dirty. A lively, buzzing community creates a welcoming (and free) atmosphere, perfect for trying out new moves without fear of tripping up. Offering classes in bachata, merengue, reggaeton and cumbia – and boasting the best teachers from Cuba – this is definitely one of Almaty’s most exotic excursions. If it all sounds a bit overwhelming, don’t panic; there’s a fair share of Latino house for those who don’t quite have the moves for something more complex than a Pitbull tune. Those who do want to learn should try the 7-9pm salsa sessions on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
