Dali’s inclusion is merited by its unbeatable location alone, but the food isn’t half-bad, either. Zhailjau Golf Resort (see Play) is one of Almaty’s most idyllic spots and you don’t have to be a member to dine here. As you may have guessed, Salvador Dali was the inspiration behind the restaurant, with a surrealist-style giant clock taking up almost the entire ceiling and reproductions of the great man’s famous works lining the walls. But we suggest taking to the outdoor terrace for lunch and letting the scenery impress you instead. Sit beneath the fluttering awning and admire a manicured green framed by magnificent mountains whilst dining on tagliatelle with smoked duck and sundried tomatoes, feta-stuffed zucchini or mozzarella salad – or do as those in the know do and order a delicious burger off-menu. Service is a little absentminded, but the only real distraction is the occasional golf cart whizzing past, bearing a high-powered international golfer and manned by a pretty female caddy. Dali really is the perfect place to while away a sunny Almaty afternoon.
