Hg2 : The Hedonist

Central Mosque

Situated close to the Green Market, bus and train stations and some of Almaty’s main arterial roads, the Central Mosque is the beating heart of a bustling part of the city that’s brimming with locals going about their business. If the Tsarist Ascension Cathedral represents one of the oldest buildings in the city, the Central Mosque represents one of the new guard as construction was only completed in 1999. It has a classically Islamic exterior complete with minarets and a newly-gilded dome that catches the light beautifully, but inside there are subtle references to yurts and traditional motifs in the décor. Services are held five times a day and sometimes the call to prayer can be heard when close by.
